The Journey

$600.00

16” x 20”

One of the many pleasures of living in the Pacific Northwest is being able to go on mountain hikes with moss, waterfalls, sun-dappled green plants and, yes, salmon! I live in a delightful place where these things exist year-round and one of my greatest joys is to hike up there, breathe in the forest smells and soak my feet in the cold mountain streams.

My goal painting this was to catch a sense of this delightful landscape that had a loose yet somewhat realistic feel about it. To help accomplish that, I decided to try out a technique that's new for me, called "Masking and Mingling". I "painted" masking fluid where ever there was foliage, to the tops of the rocks and boulders and to the waterfall, which prevents paint from adhering to those portions of the paper. Then I mingled color washes over the "unmasked" areas of the painting. Once the mingled color washes were dry, I removed the masking fluid, added bright colors to some of those masked areas such as the foliage, and softened other areas with light washes of color, but left the focal point of the waterfall as sharp white. The result is this loosely rendered watercolor that evokes a sense of what it's like to be there.

Here's a short video of how I painted it.

This painting was created using 140# Arches watercolor paper and a variety of professional transparent watercolors. It is hand-signed, matted and framed.

Price excludes shipping (contact me for a shipping estimate if you live outside of the Gig Harbor, WA, area.)

Painting sizes refer to unframed artwork. Frames typically add 4–8" to the length and width, depending on artwork size.
