The Journey
One of the many pleasures of living in the Pacific Northwest is being able to go on mountain hikes with moss, waterfalls, sun-dappled green plants and, yes, salmon! I live in a delightful place where these things exist year-round and one of my greatest joys is to hike up there, breathe in the forest smells and soak my feet in the cold mountain streams.
My goal painting this was to catch a sense of this delightful a landscape that had a loose yet somewhat realistic feel about it.
To help accomplish that, I decided to try out a technique that's new for me, called "Masking and Mingling".
I "painted" on masking fluid ever there was foliage, to the tops of the rocks and boulders and to the waterfall, which prevents paint from adhering to those portions of the paper. Then I mingled color washes over the "unmasked" areas of the painting. Once the mingled color washes were dry, I removed the masking fluid, added bright colors to some of those masked areas such as the foliage, and softened other areas with light washes of color, but left the focal point of the waterfall as sharp white. The result is this loosely rendered watercolor that evokes a sense of what it's like to be there.
Here's a short video of how I painted it.
These are high quality giclee reproductions that are printed on fine art paper and come with a white border. They generally arrive at your home within 2-3 weeks of ordering, ready to be matted and framed. Most of the available sizes will fit standard frames with mats that can be found at any store or online site. When choosing a frame, the mat size should be the same as the reproduction size, and the final frame size is generally 4 - 8” larger on the width and length, depending on the size of the reproduction.
Prices for unframed reproductions include shipping.
Custom sized reproductions may be available. I can also mat and frame your reproduction for you, using archival mats and conservation-grade UV blocking acrylic fronts. Just ask me for pricing!
